I think this is the copmmon rock crab even though found in a sandy area, it could have been living on the goose barnacle log. Southbound trip.

"Large male crab (carapace width >20mm), six teeth on carapace, purple colour with white spots. white ""socks"" on each leg. Large Chelae (nippers) with pads of muscle between the dactyls (fingers). Quite aggressive, defensive behaviour!"
