Black Onion Fly Tritoxa flexa near Nicholasville, Kentucky 23 June 2015 37.9131 -84.5319 Iâm on a road trip with John and Kendra Abbott. In addition to looking for odonates, they are also working on a new field guide to insects of North America. They are doing some black lighting at night as time and locations permit. I took advantage of the light box photo set ups they are using to take illustrative images of various insects, so Iâll post a few I took here. These were insects that were collected at a light at night, then photographed. ID by Dr. John Abbott.

This was a really fun find! This fly is a parasitoid of May beetles. It lands on a beetle, causing the beetle to fly off. While the beetle opens up the hardened wings, this fly lays an egg on the beetle's back while the soft parts are exposed. The larva emerges and eats the entire interior of the beetle. It then emerges as a fly next spring. :) Also, I put this fly in the fridge for a bit to get better pictures -- I let it fly off after the photo shoot, hopefully to find a nice May beetle host!
