Holotype of "Encope galapagensis" (synonym of Encope micropora tetrapora), type SNMNH E6817, aboral view, collected in San Cristobal Island, Galapagos Islands, Pacific Ocean. ID & Photographer : Simon E. Coppard.
Amazed to find this is an iNat first. Skeletons and a few live individuals were common subtidally at one beach south of town. I never saw them as beach drift. This lovely animal seems to be represented on the internet primarily as a cheap novelty or gift item. It took some sleuthing just to track down the scientific name.

Description: January 13th, 2007 11:31 AM PST Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada Canon EOS 20D 50mm focal length 20s, 10s, 5s, 2.5s, 1.3s, 0.6s, f/8, ISO 100 Approximate EV: 3 This studio shot is a composite of multiple exposures using a flashlight to backlight the sand dollar test in several different locations. The test was placed on a piece of transparent plastic to keep it distanced from the red towel used for the background, and to allow the placement of the flashlight between the test and the background. Several exposures were used to capture a greater dynamic range than a single exposure was capable of, allowing detail to be preserved in both the highlights and shadows. Date: 22 January 2010, 10:59.
