Microstylum morosum with a prey item, a Neon Skimmer (Libellula croceipennis) Palmetto State Park, Gonzales Co., Texas 2 August 2010 Apparently the dragonfly became entangled in the spider web and was hanging by several strands of the web when the robber fly discovered the situation and flew in to take advantage of the easy meal.

a very large robber fly who was very cooperative in staying for pictures, such an impressive critter not totally sure on the ID but from looking at the commentary and links on Aguilita's robber fly, this seems likely

had never noticed this before but this robber fly when seen from above appears to have a face on its thorax, and also when you look at its eyes, a second small face appears... are these artifacts of the picture or part of a defensive strategy that makes it appear it is always watching? or due to my over active imagination...
