densely feeding on NZ flax, apparently causing damage to host; there seems to be major infestations on several plants; I'm told they have become conspicuous in the last week

They have been around for several weeks. Very sluggish, mostly sitting on the ground in the lee side of our house. It looks like a fly, under x10 magn. with only one pair of wings. Couldn't find it in any of my books (A Crowe, Powell's, RES Book of British Insects).

Killed by a fungus. Seen about 1 metre up a Tree Fern trunk, next to the walking path. It was the only fungus-attacked victim I could find in the immediate the area, although there were other healthy looking Passionvine Hoppers around.
