Species Helleborus foetidus Genus Helleborus Familia Ranunculaceae Summary[
edit] A direct scan, which I made myself, of an enlarged cross-section of Helleborus foetidus ("stinking hellebore" or "setterwort"). A specimen from my own garden. This flower is not a bud; it is almost fully open (the green "petals" remain attached and will open wider after the stamens fall off, once the flower has been pollinated). The flower has no normal petals; the apparent petals are actually sepals (or tepals). The true petals lie within and have been modified into pale green horn-shaped "nectaries" (one is visible in the right hand side of the flower). Several tightly-packed rows of stamens (male organs) surround the (female) centre of the flower where some unripe embryo seeds are visible inside the ovary. This scan is in the Public Domain. If you use it outside Wikipedia, a credit (Simon Garbutt) would be appreciated.
