These were EVERYwhere in the oak forests. Never seen these in the East Bay before, but maybe I haven't been paying attention? It would be hard to miss a flight this big, though.

"California Oak Moth (Phryganidia californica), pupa and adult, China Camp State Park, Marin County, California - 25 May 2013. We found several of these pupae along the Shoreline Trail today and I then found this large pale moth on a picnic table at China Camp Point. I didn't know what these were - thanks to ""shotguneddie"" from Bug Guide for the identification. According to Powell and Opler (Moths of Western North America, 2009), this species ""can be so abundant that its larvae completely defoliate large expanses of oak forest, especially those of Quercus agrifolia, coast live oak""."

"California Oak Moth (Phryganidia californica), male, Windy Hill Open Space Preserve, San Mateo County, California - 1 June 2013. These moths were quite abundant along the Meadow Trail here this morning. I recently photographed a female and pupa, so this completes the ""hat trick""! It's interesting that once you learn about a species like this, suddenly you see them everywhere..."
