This species is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and this subspecies is endemic to the Big Island, Hawaii. In this photo it is taking nectar from the Mamane (Sophora chrysophylla) flowers. This photo is around 6400ft/1951m in a subalpine forest on the NE portion of Mauna Loa.
Species is now extinct. This specimen was collected, live, in the 1930s and was in Paignton Zoo, UK until its demise whereupon it was donated to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, UK
