An extremely rare and fascinating find, this is an albino Geoffroy's Hairy-legged Bat (Anoura geoffroyi). This species feeds on fruit, nectar, pollen, and insects, and provides efficient seed dispersal and pollinating services for several tree species in Trinidad. The Geoffroy's Hairy-legged Bat roosts in caves and tunnels. Usually dark brown in colour, we captured and released this albino in central Trinidad in March of this year. Its bright white colouring is easy for predators like owls to spot at night, so it is extremely rare to even see an Albino bat, far less capture one. Hopefully this little guy is still dodging predators out there. Photo: Andrew Palmer (Trinibats)

We found yet another albino Geoffroy's Hairy-legged Bat (Anoura geoffroyi) in the Tamana Cave this march. This one was an adult and pure white, compared to last year's capture which had a greyish tinge to its coat. Photo: Jonathan Durward (Trinibats)
