Citheronia splendens on Arizona wild cotton, Gossypium thurberi. Molino Basin, Santa Catalina Mountains, Pima County, Arizona, USA. 9 August 2008. Here's a video of another one of these caterpillars. During monsoon season, they're quite common in this field of wild cotton.

A type of sphinx moth; one of the more interesting visitors to the flower bed.

I believe these rather cool insects are Clearwings.... I've only looked in my vintage (1903) Holland's Moth Book; he has these in the Genus Haemorrhagia; this is an obsolete term: now they are of the Hemaris. I'd be happy if anyone could further ID it. On 'Bug Guide' I got an ID as Hemaris thetis. This makes sense as it is in California, 'tho it looked to me at first glance to be H. diffinis.
