Biggest moth I ever saw. The Northlanders I was with were nonplussed - fairly common apparently up there. Ruralish property with Manuka/Kanuka, wilding pines and (I think) Acacia longofolia scrub surrounding, with some pig-fern undergrowth; there was the odd stand of macrocarpa and some mature eucalypts in the area. One pic is of the undersides taken through a window.

We found 10 of these on our tomato plants. Sadly my mom doesn't like them so she killed everyone of them even though I offered to raise them. The main way of identifying the caterpillars is the color of the horns. These guys have red horns while tomato hornworms have blue horns.

One found today. I'm hoping my mom won't find it and kill it. It was eating a leaf today which was pretty cool.
