Not only is this specimen fairly large, well versed in stalking prey, and an excellent chooser of cypress root lairs.. it's also quite photogenic.Florida Common Snapping TurtleManatee Springs State ParkChiefland Florida Olympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom GearSea Life Sea Dragon 2000 Underwater Photo LightCecil on 1stPix InstaGram:

This huge snapper spends most of the day tucked away near the bank of the spring. No one that has ever seen it will soon forget, and it has the run of the spring, whenever it wants. After being spotted, a Snapper comes out into the open and heads for another refuge. We spotted a gator in the open near Peacock III a few minutes earlier, but I lost sight of it in there. While skimming around the edge of the pool, I spotted something that didn't make any sense. It looked just like an open alligator mouth hidden under that carpet of vegetation. After a long contest of "Wait and see what it is." a little movement finally revealed it was actually the rear claw of a big snapper. I would have tried to tell it that it's my turn to hide now, but judging from the size of it, I figured it would be better to just play by the house rules.Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State ParkSuwannee County, Florida, USAOlympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom Gear

I can't imagine there is a bigger Snapper in residence around the head springs, and this behemoth couldn't have been calmer; while it didn't venture out too far, it didn't seem to mind the light in it's face, didn't stir up the bottom, and stayed perfectly still for several minutes at a time.Florida Common Snapping TurtleManatee Springs State ParkChiefland Florida Olympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom GearSea Life Sea Dragon 2000 Underwater Photo Light

This big Snapper didn't seemed at all concerned with all the people making a bunch of racket by the tube take-out, and paused for a few pictures before he went back to doing his own thing.Common (Florida) Snapping TurtleBlue Springs State ParkOrange City, Volusia County Florida, USA Olympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom Gear

Floating down the Santa Fe at Ginnie Springs on a little spring hopping expedition, we encountered a few decent sized turtles, bowfin, bass, some suckers, and a couple hundred PBR cans, a ton of Miller Light bottles, and a rarely seen Bud Ice pony keg that converts into a wood duck nesting box. If not for the illumination from the dive light, I would have never been able to see this behemoth clearly. But I guess it was one two many lumens, and they got spooked. Judging from the size of this snail, the Snapper must be huge.Common Snapping TurtleWes Skiles Peacock Springs State ParkSuwannee County, Florida, USAOlympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom GearSea Life Sea Dragon 2000 Underwater Light
