I couldn't positively identify this guy. Any suggestions? Sorry, no shots with the tail visible. This is all we saw of him. Probably 2' in length, in approximately 10' of water, midafternoon. My best guess is Purplemouth Moray, but I've never seen one before. Just looks superficially like the photo in my fieldguide.

It looks stuck in the shallow pool of river. It's not been raining for a long time. I only can tell its an eel, was quite big but I don't know which one?

One of the many eels maintained at Willowbank. Feeding them is a treat for the kids.

This was a week stream running through kanuka-dominated bush. There was a pool right next to a camp kitchen, I saw as many as four eels at a time, between 0.4 and 1.0m long at a guess. Think they probably get fed scraps a bit. Water quality is good if the number of EPT invertebrates is any indication. Pretty sure long, rather than short-finned, you can see in the first pic the dorsal fin is longer than the ventral if you look closely.

A dead eel we found washed up on Little Okains Bay beach. The dorsal fin extended much further along the body than the ventral fin, which I've read is a characteristic of longfin eels. It was a big hit with the kids.
