These Garden Carrion Beetles were feeding on the remnants of a dead grasshopper. They were told from the similar. H. aenescens by the slightly forward projecting shape of their pronotums.

At least one of these was attracted to fluids apparently from rancid meat thrown in a trash can in the state park. In company with two Nicrophorus species. Apparently a rather southerly record for this species based on BG records: http://bugguide.net/node/view/37876

This was an orange and black beetle crawling on a rock in Sagehen Creek at the UC-Berkeley Sagehen Research Station. It was about an inch long.
