The specimen was found near the road popping in and out of its hole in the ground, there were also many others in the area popping out. The organism was a light tan color, with a small bushy tail and small ears that were set far back its head. As well the organism moved very swiftly but allowed humans to get fairly close. The organism was approximately 30 cm long.

I counted six California Ground Squirrels in all. They stayed out of the trees and seemed to occupy an embankment under some pine trees, next to a picnic area. Many holes were dug into the hillside. The dirt was crumbly and loose. One squirrel scratched at the ground, foraging by itself. One squirrel quickly retreated into a hole. Two squirrels sat near the entrance to separate tunnels, watching me. Two squirrels chased each other around a ruined brick wall.
