Black Onion Fly Tritoxa flexa near Nicholasville, Kentucky 23 June 2015 37.9131 -84.5319 Iâm on a road trip with John and Kendra Abbott. In addition to looking for odonates, they are also working on a new field guide to insects of North America. They are doing some black lighting at night as time and locations permit. I took advantage of the light box photo set ups they are using to take illustrative images of various insects, so Iâll post a few I took here. These were insects that were collected at a light at night, then photographed. ID by Dr. John Abbott.

Unfortunately it was perched in the middle of some poison ivy and it flew off before I could work up the stupidity required to step into said poison ivy, but it was clearly awesome, rotating its wings like a champ.
