A slender, dark brown mammal with a narrow snout (unlike the more blunt face of a muskrat or beaver) and a white chin. I would estimate that it was about 18 inches long from snout to tail tip. It was swimming in Lake Frederick (Frederick County, VA), and it climbed out of the water at the dam. I got photographs of it swimming (the white chin is evident in that photo), and on the dam.

Observed on the ice of the Furnace Brook just above its intersection with the Otter Creek. Primary id was size and shape since it was backlit and running between various trees and crossing the ice between patches of open water.
