Alas, one of the two queens was missing and presumed dead. I fretted all day over this--it's easy to become attached to the little buggers and wish them well--but by day's end another bee keeper whom Scrib knows had installed a new queen and we're resting easier. The other queen looks great and the hive is, well, a beehive of activity! This is the box that held the healthy queen before the workers ate through the candy plug and freed her into the hive. It blew my mind to see that the bees had constructed a large piece of comb (the white wax) on the queen's box.
Location: 32.818177,-117.193328I found this bee in my backyard. I live in the Clairemont area of San Diego and my backyard is adjacent to the Tecolote Canyon. These bees are abundant in the area. They are always in the canyon, collecting nectar and pollen from flowers. This insect is a part of the High Tech High Insects of San Diego Field Guide.
