2011-02-27 Lower Austria, district Schwechat (Schwechat-Au, 150 m AMSL).The floods did not break this particular tree but they still caused havoc here.German name: Schwarz-Pappel
2009.11.01: Austria, Lower Austria (district Bruck/Leitha, 185 m AMSL): habitus, cultivated. The variety growing in pyramidal shape is preferred for parks and avenues; here they're planted in a ring around the circle of the Roman Amphitheatre of Carnuntum (Petronell). The leaves in the foreground also are from P. nigra.German name: Schwarzpappel
2011-03-20 Lower Austria, district Bruck/Leitha (temporarily flooded meadow at Danube river - outside of national park territory; 140 msm Quadrant 7867/2).Just beginning to flower.German name: Silber-Pappel
2011-05-27 Vienna XXi. district (Bisamberg, 221 msm Quadrant 7664/3).German name: (Echte) Balsam-PappelThis is either 'true' P. balsamifera or a hybrid where it is involved as a parent; the tree is native to Northern America and cultivated here in Austria in parks, but also for fast-growing wood fuel plantations (hybrids usually are used for the latter). This specimen here grew between a road and a vineyard, it certainly didn't look like it were cultivated for forestry, and it even might be an escapee growing wild here.
2011-07-15 Vienna XXII. district, Lobau heath - Heisslnde (Danube National Park, 153 msm Quadrant 7865/1).German name: Grau-PappelShedding their leaves untypically early due to dry weather conditions - something which I haven't seen happen since 2008 (which was dry too, while 2009 and 2010 were very wet).
2012-09-11 Lower Austria, district Wien-Umgebung - Fischamend-AuHybrids cultivated in Danube alluvial forest, outside the national park: they are very problematic concerning preservation of native black poplar populations, especially as they're still very popular outside of nature reserves like here.
