We passed by the same point on the track twice on this day, and both times this morepork was wandering around on the ground, apparently searching for insects.

A morepork resting in Lothlorien forest, Hinewai Reserve.

A morepork perched on a nikau palm along Truman's Track.

Spotted in trees above Reeves Track shortly before 3pm, in the Tararua Range, and it flew ahead and watched me approach for a short distance. The location's fairly reliable thanks to a gps-geotagged photograph.

Huge commotion in the garden this morning (7.20) A Morepork was sitting in my puriri tree being mobbed by Mynas,Starlings,Blackbirds,a Thrush and a Chaffinch. The Morepork flew of (With other birds in pursuit) when I tried to get close enough for a photo. The Blackbirds and the Thrush seemed to be the closest to the Morepork and it was mainly the Blackbirds close behind when it flew off. Photo taken in afternoon at neighbours when Morepork was being mobbed again. Note Blackbird below Morepork. Many other Blackbirds in tree and a Thrush just out of picture to the right.

Sorry for rather dark photo. It was dusk! The bird was not at all frightened though and I could get within about 3 metres of it.
-
Disturbed by me walking past, during the day.

I was very happy this ruru allowed me to see it! I hear them all the time, and have seen them in the past, but they are difficult to photograph when they are up in trees :) Usually I see/hear them in pairs, but this one appeared to be alone.
