These are No Fly Zone pants from Eastern Mountain Sports. They say permethrin 0.52%. Tell that to the mosquitoes & ticks! They have been washed maybe a dozen times (supposed to be good for 70); I noticed mosquitoes landing on them much earlier than that. They have never been treated with stain remover, bleach, fabric softener, or concentrated detergent. Iâd be interested in hearing othersâ experiences with permethrin-treated clothing. Is the whole concept a snare and a delusion? Or is it just this particular product thatâs a dud? The bug is a male American Dog Tick (1 of 2 picked up together while gardening), 3.5 mm long.

Iâm on a road trip with John and Kendra Abbott. In addition to looking for odonates, they are also working on a new field guide to insects of North America. I took advantage of the light box photo set ups they are using to take illustrative images of various insects, spiders, etc., so Iâll post a few I took here. The tick in these images was one I sort of had a personal relationship with, as it was crawling on my sock. ID to genus here, I will add a species eventually. It was plucked off my sock, photographed, then retained as a specimen by John. Take that, tick!
