Description: Skarlagen vårbeger - Scarlet Elf Cup - Sarcoscypha austriaca This is a rather special fungus appearing in early spring. I've only seen this fungus on one location, in Kjaglidalen, Bærum. It's very small, but the red colour makes it more easy to find. It grows on dead branches. Date: 25 April 2010, 18:39. Source:

Slo.: avstrijska krlatna aica - Habitat: Mixed, predominantly hardwood woodland, in a humid ravine, cretaceous clastic rock (flysh), rain protected by trees canopies, mostly in shade, precipitations ~3.000 mm/year, average temperature 8-10 deg C, elevation 445 m (1.450 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: buried rotten branches, probably Acer sp. - Comment: Scattered, solitary or in loose groups. Many specimens around. Spore dimensions and shape (truncated or slightly indented), mucilaginous caps with no envelope on the sides, number and diameter of LBs, all correspond well to Baral's key (Ref.4.). Sarcoscypha coccinea; taken with BRESSER BioLux AL microscope, in-built low-resolution camera sensor. Not too sharp unfortunately, but main features are clear enough.
From this specimen.

2011-02-12 Lower Austria, district Gnserndorf (just outside the national park - broadleaf forest, 155 m AMSL).German name: sterreich-KelchbecherlingID: not a 100% certain; I have been told by
Heinz Forstinger at naturbeobachtung_at that while ID is likely to be correct it would be necessary to check under the microscope to be sure, however I couldn't yet deliver clear microscopic evidence for this one.Update: I've finally managed to take a shot of the hair on the outer shell (which should be smooth with this species, which is the case), so
S. austriaca should indeed be the correct identification.Synonymy:
Lachnea austriaca, Molliardiomyces coccineus, Peziza austriaca, Peziza imperialis (Index Fungorum - Species Fungorum) for
Sarcoscypha austriaca var. austriaca; no synonyms yet for the newly described (on moist acorn wood in Austria)
var. lutea.
