I'm guessing these are egg cases of scale insects, on leaves of an exotic ice plant growing on a rock wall along Hackthorn Road. There was a black ant amongst them.

Lots of these, on iceplant on the back dues. When the brown top is removed there is a bit of space and then down the bottom lots of small oval shapes.

Note that the main photo is rotated to make the insect look more like a plant bud. In reality, it was hanging from the underside of the stem. Found on a stem of a young kowhai tree (Sophora microphylla) in our back garden. Macro photos are through my 10x botanical hand lens.
