Catch Report - 25/05/11 - Farmland Had another amazing catch awaiting me this morning at 5am, with 3 traps running and mild conditions it seemed perfect whilst setting up, although after a few hours the sky cleared and a chill was in the air. about 5.30am the wind really picked up and the sky looked ever menacing, but luckily the rain held off for long enough to check the catch, and what a catch, there was literally 100's of moths everywhere inside and out, every egg tray was full both sides of different species including a massive haul of 220 Nutmeg's! and 124 Rustic Shoulder-knot's. Also I added 5 new species to my list, including a single Shears, a moth i've struggled to locate in the past 4 years. Most interesting though was a tiny longhorn micro moth called Adela croesella which i'm pretty sure is the correct id for this moth. I will be taking to show the Herts County recorder tomorrow. This being only the 2nd ever record for this species (funnily enough the first was a day ago, so I was beaten to a County first by one day hehe) Catch Report - 25/05/11 - 2x 125w MV Robinson Traps and 1x 160w MBT Robinson Trap, all with white sheets underneath and positioned either on flat grass or concrete. Field Trip - 13/06/18 - Ashwell Quarry My second field trip of the year as to the far North-west of the County of Hertfordshire to Ashwell Quarry. I'm quite fond of this small disused chalk quarry and grassland, and i've had some fantastic species of the last few years that I have been recording here. This night back in mid-june was no different. In total over 4 lights (Sorry Mercury Blended trap, but I couldn't find your bulb...which I have now found luckily) I recorded 95 species of which only 36 were Macro Moths, leaving the Micro Moths to bolster the list by 59 species! The day had been warm at 25 degrees and the temperature was holding up nicely at dusk. Unfortunately the wind increased and with clear skies I was cursing the conditions from the offset (Particularly as it had been cloudy, still and muggy all day), there was now a distinct coolness in the breeze but I was determined to see what would turn up. It turned out to be worth it with one new moth for my records. There were at least 5 examplrs of Sloe Pug! Hardly surprising given the fact that the reserve is bordered by umpteen Prunus bushes, but the fact that I had never seen them before at this time of the year was a nice surprise in itself. Also Netted Pug made it's annual appearance, not a particularly fresh example mind. Both common species of Metzeneria turned up giving a nice comparison between the two species. Other than that, Tawny Shears was most welcome and another two good micros for the night were the distinctive Luquetia lobella and Telechrysis tripuncta, the latter quite scarce in the County. Below is the full list. 36 Macro and 59 Micro species recorded Catch Report - 13/06/18 - Ashwell Quarry - 1x 250w Frosted MV Robinson Trap, 2x 125w MV Robinson Trap, 1x twin 20w Wemite Actinic + 1x 40w Actinic & 15w LED corn light Macro Moths Bright-line Brown-eye Brown Rustic Cinnabar Clouded Brindle Common Wainscot Dagger sp Dark Spectacle Elephant Hawk-moth Eyed Hawk-moth Fern Freyer's Pug Garden Carpet Green Silver-lines Haworth's Pug Large Nutmeg Large Yellow Underwing Light Arches Middle-barred Minor Mottled Beauty Mottled Rustic Netted Pug Pale Prominent Pale Tussock Peppered Moth Poplar Grey Purple Bar Riband Wave Royal Mantle Sandy Carpet Scorched Wing Silver Y Sloe Pug [NEW!] Tawny Shears Treble Lines Wood Carpet Yellow Shell Micro Moths Agapeta hamana Agapeta zoegana Agonopterix arenella Anania hortulata Anania perlucidalis Ancylis achatana Anthophila fabriciana Aphomia sociella Argyresthia pruniella Blastobasis lacticolella Borkhausenia fuscescens Bryotropha terrella Celypha lacunana Chrysoteuchia culmella Clepsis consimiliana Cnephasia sp Cochylimorpha straminea Cochylis atricapitana Crambus lathoniellus Crambus pascuella Crambus perlella Crassa unitella Elachista apicipunctella Elachista atricomella Endrosis sarcitrella Ephestia sp Epinotia signatana Epiphyas postvittana Eucosma cana Eucosma hohenwartiana Eudonia pallida Eupoecilia angustana Hedya nubiferana Hedya pruniana Hypsopygia costalis Luquetia lobella Metzneria lappella Metzneria metzneriella Monopis crocicapitella Monopis laevigella Monopis obviella Nemapogon cloacella Notocelia cynosbatella Notocelia trimaculana Notocelia uddmanniana Pandemis cerasana Paraswammerdamia nebulella Phtheochroa rugosana Phtheochroa sodaliana Plutella xylostella Prays fraxinella Scoparia ambigualis Scoparia basistrigalis Scrobipalpa costella Stenoptilia pterodactyla Telechrysis tripuncta Teleiodes vulgella Tinea semifulvella Udea olivalis

edit] Description: Catch Report - 29/05/12 - Bayfordbury University Grounds So far behind with my moth reports so here goes! This was another trip to the university grounds at Bayfordbury that started well, then got awful as my generator failed then gladly picked up as the static 125w MV picked up some good species and 1 new one for me in the form of Coleophora striatipennella. A very mild night but quite windy at times. Field Trip - Hexton Chalk Pit - 25/05/17 Thursday night saw me trapping at Hexton Chalk Pit for the first time this year after doing a few daytime forays for moths and finding a few bits and pieces, it was time to go all out and spread 5 traps over the reserve. I was joined by Trevor for a bit and Tony popped by to see how things were going. The day had been very warm and sunny and mid-twenties by 4pm, there was however no cloud cover but with a warm breeze it was hardly going to get cold and in fact it was still 14 degrees at 2am when I left the reserve. The traps out of the breeze did fair better and by midnight, the exposed trap on the chalk hill did take a pounding and most of the moths ended up about 3 metres from the trap having been blown there. Numbers were pretty good and the species kept coming in, heck if I had stayed until dawn I probably could have added another 15 species I reckon but I had work the next day and getting to bed at 2.30am was late enough! Some cracking species were netted before the lights were turned on, Bucculatrix bechsteinella (only my second ever), Elachista biatomella (new to me and a rare moth in the County only having one previous record), a shiney green moth which is the uncommon Eulamprotes unicolorella and Rhopobota stagnana (another new moth to me). I joked to Trevor that we may as well pack up now after the successful half an hour of sweeping! Other good moths that later came to the lights were Wood Carpet, Netted Pug, Anania fuscalis, Alder Moth, Marbled Coronet and Satyr Pug. The best moth for me if correct would be Syncopacma sangiella, Graeme will look at it and if it is it will be a County first record. It was also very pleasing to see that Anania fuscalis is still hanging on there after re-discovering it 181 years later in 2015. Still reeling from seeing so many moths and I hope to be back in a few weeks. Summary[
edit] Description: A belated sweeping session yields 3 new moths for me Back on the 21st of May I had a brief hour sweeping session along a wildflower field at the edge of Hexton Chalk Pit just about in Hertfordshire (As it border's bedfordshire strangely on both sides). I ended up with a few nice moths including 3 firsts for me, Marsh Pug, Common Heath and Pancalia leuwenhoekella, all three species quite scarce in Herts. If that wasn't enough I caught up with a little beauty that i've only ever seen once before, the tiny shiney Stephensia brunnichella. The weather was warm with highs of 22c but a little breezy which made netting tricky at times. Full list below of species seen but no counts given There is still a Stigmella sp, Parornix sp and 2x Dichrorampha sps to gen det.
