Summary[
edit] Description: A 3rd garden record of Ypsolopha ustella Last night the trap went out again, opting for the 125w MV and 40w Actinic combo which i've got hanging from a projector screen just behind the Robinson Trap (See pic below). The light looks really good against it and hopefully will act as a magnet to moths flying by and also protect the light from shining in our eyes too much in the kitchen! A relatively mild night last night with lows of 9c, in fact it was much like the other day where the temperature rose as the evening progressed. Today looks set to be possibly the warmest day of the year so far at 13 degrees. To the moths.. and there were only two. A Pale Brindled Beauty found this morning on a fence panel 2 metres from the trap (which didn't like the white screen) and a rather nice form that i've never seen before of Ypsolopha ustella, which was potted up at around 10pm (and was sitting on the lit screen!) It is a good one for my garden despite it being a common moth, making it just 3 records in 5 and a half years. 27/01/18 Macro Moths 1x Pale Brindled Beauty Micro Moths 1x Ypsolopha ustella [NFY]. Summary[
edit] Description: Catch Report - 01/03/12 - Farmland/Back Garden - Hertfordshire Happy St.David's day and a memorable night for me as well with two species I didn't expect to find in my trap this morning, Ypsolopha mucronella and a Dotted Chestnut. The Ypsolopha mucronella is my 3rd ever in 6 years and new for the garden. The Dotted Chestnut is my 7th and first for my garden as well. The rest of the catch comprised of the usual suspects. The trap is now packed away for the weekend and possibly well into the week as chilly temperatures are once upon us (I wonder how many people made the mistake of planting bulbs already!) Summary[
edit] Description: Last night of March heralds a new species! After a fantastic catch out in the field it was back to a much smaller catch come Saturday morning, nonetheless it was certainly quality over quantity with 3 new for year species, 1 of which is completely new for my garden..(and no it wasn't a Herald, although I still haven't had a 2017 record yet), Ypsolopha mucronella. This particular moth being only the 4th specimen I have ever taken with previous records as follows Hatfield Broad Oak - 26/02/2009 Hatfield Broad Oak - 03/04/2009 Braughing Friars Farmland - 01/03/2012 It was great to see Purple Thorn as well as Streamer. Purple Thorn is an uncommon moth for my garden with just two previous records, one each in 2013 and 2014. All in all, a small catch but quality over quantity which I will happily take any day. Field Trip - Roughdown Common - New to Herts Jersey Mocha! Our last visit of the year to this prolific nature reserve that always springs a surprise on us, and this night was no different. With a warm South-westerly breeze dominating the weather forecast and lows of a comfortable 15 degrees, we once again decided to run traps on the Boxmoor Trusts land. The hope was to turn up something unusual for the site or intercept a migrant (for which there were plenty about). We succeeded on both accounts and star of the show had to go to a worn Maiden's Blush looking moth which Ian Bennell found in the long grass, several feet away from one of my traps. Passing it around to everyone it just didn't look right for this species and the brain thought of other possibilities which were quickly narrowed down to either a worn Maiden's Blush (likely) a Clay Triple-lines (still quite likely) and then the absurd (Jersey Mocha). The moth was retained and dissected the next day and I was literally on the edge of my seat awaiting the results back from Graeme Smith. When he said that it is a Jersey Mocha, that inkling to retain the moth was all worth it! Graeme had to promptly get a cup of coffee to calm down as neither myself or he could believe it, another new to Herts this year! And hat's off to Ian Bennell for spotting it and not just discarding it as a worn Maiden's Blush. Other good species included a pair of Psoricoptera gibbosella (Only my 2nd and 3rd examples in 10 years), Hellinsia carphodactyla (Which was new to me) and Depressria badiella (Which was retained and also dissected by Graeme Smith and a great record for Herts, again NEW TO ME!) What a fantastic night it was and thanks go out to David, Roger and Ian for helping me make the night a success and for being as eagle-eyed as ever. Species counted but numbers not noted. Summary[
edit] Description: Season's Greeting Hello all. Not much to report lately and with my wife not being very well I have had little time to think about moths. I did trap on Monday night on the 21st and managed 5 moths including a year first Ypsolopha ustella, which I initially couldn't believe actually was a year first this late. Other than that another Tachystola acroxantha was nice to get (6 records this year now proving that they must be breeding locally) Merry Christmas..a day late but I hope you all have a lovely Boxing Day whether you are spending time with your family or hitting the sales!
