"Mostly the commonly known ""5 finger"" burgundy coloured starfish can be seen here along with the underside of a larger species of starfish. This was amongst the contents of dredged oysters."

As I had learnt what the habitat and tidal zone at Brittle Star Alley was I decided to test that in another tidal gut and found this beauty which I had not seen before! I have now photographed the back as @sadiem suggested :) Low Intertidal / Shallow sub tidal zone.

"Living in the shallow subtidal that is always under water. It was under a ledge the I found when moving the big browns out of the way. After the in situ photos I went to grab it and it scurried back under the ledge past the kina - good strategy! So went and nosied in other places and came back about 1/2 hour later and managed to get it out to photograph the back. This bittle star is strong and not as ""brittle"" as the smaller ones I see around here. Totally stoked to find this :) I think this is a Ophiopsammus maculata (Niwa guide Pg 34)"

This Ophiopsammus maculata is a permanant resident in this area and it is the only one I have found around here yet :)
