Bovingdon Brickworks - Hemel Hempstead - Field Trip - 11/07/14 We went back to Bovingdon Brickworks on Friday in search of the Garden Tigers we found last year at around this time. Also seeing other people catching them up and down the Country last week spurred me on to go all out with 5 traps and cover as much area as we could. Using over 200 metres of cable the traps were spread out in a delta shape from the car park. The night started warm and muggy and once again I was plagued with horse-flies and proceeded to sit in the car until it got dark enough to avoid them! Once dark the full moon was very bright but luckily we had imminent cloud cover and by around 10pm the moon was completely obscured. It was quite a damp night though with a spooky mist surrounding each trap. Best moth of the night was a Tiger (We didn't get any Garden Tiger's unfortunately) a rare one for the County, a Scarlet Tiger and about the 7th record for Hertfordshire. It could possibly be a wanderer as there seems to be a lot of migrant and wandering activity across the County at present which is great news for us moth'ers! Other good Macro moths included plenty of Ruby Tigers, Millers, Bordered Sallows, Barred Hook-tip, and 8 Coronets. On the Micro moth front the best was probably Spilonota laricana, which was taken home to double-check, as Spilonota ocellana is very similiar and was much more common on the night. Two plumes are still to check. The the odd looking Double Square-spot turned out to be just that. There were literally hundreds of Chrysoteuchia culmella's and Eucosma hohenwartiana's coming to all of the traps, both easily numbering 300+ Lots and lots of Knapweed as far as the eye could see. All be ready for a predicted heat wave next week, traps at the ready! Field Trip - 27/06/18 - Home Wood - Bedfordshire Below is the trip I made to Home Wood at the tail end of June. It was an incredibl successful and warm night and may good species were observed over the 6 traps that we setup over various parts of the woodland. In total, 197 species were recorded with several pening dissections in the Winter. Best species for me personally were Euspilapteryx auroguttella, both Ethmia dodecea & Ethmia quadrillella, Strophedra nitidana and Gelechia scotinella. Both of the latter species are new to me. Below is the full list. 96 Macro and 101 Micro species recorded Catch Report - 27/06/18 - Home Wood - 1x 250w Frosted MV Robinson Trap, 3x 125w MV Robinson Trap, 1x twin 20w Wemite Actinic + 1x 40w Actinic & 15w LED corn light Macro Moths Barred Red Barred Straw Barred Yellow Beautiful Hook-tip Blackneck Blood-vein Blotched Emerald Blue-bordered Carpet Brimstone Moth Brown Rustic Brown Scallop Buff Arches Buff Ermine Buff Footman Buff-tip Burnished Brass Clouded Border Clouded Brindle Clouded Silver Common Emerald Common Footman Common Marbled Carpet Common Swift Common Wave Common White Wave Dark Arches Dark Umber Dotted Fan-foot Double Square-spot Double-striped Pug Dun-bar Engrailed Fan Foot Fern Flame Flame Carpet Flame Shoulder Ghost Moth Green Pug Green Silver-lines Grey Pug Grey-pine Carpet Haworth's Pug Heart & Club Heart & Dart July Highflyer Large Emerald Large Nutmeg Large Twin-spot Carpet Large Yellow Underwing Light Arches Lunar-spotted Pinion Maiden's Blush Maple Prominent Marbled Brown Marbled Minor Marbled White-spot Minor Shoulder-knot Mottled Beauty Orange Footman Pale Mottled Willow Pale Oak Beauty Pale Prominent Peach Blossom Peppered Moth Petty Chalk Carpet Pine Hawk-moth Poplar Hawk-moth Riband Wave Satin Beauty Satyr Pug Scarce Footman Scorched Carpet Scorched Wing Setaceous Hebrew Character Short Cloaked Moth Silver-ground Carpet Silver-Y Single-dotted Wave Small Blood-vein Small Dotted Buff Small Fan-footed Wave Small Yellow Wave Smoky Wainscot Snout Spectacle Spruce Carpet Straw Dot Swallow-tailed Moth Tawny Marbled Minor Tawny-barred Angle Treble Brown Spot Uncertain V-Pug White Satin Yellow-tail Micro Moths Accentria emphemerella Acleris hastiana Acleris holmiana Acleris kochiella Acleris notana ferrugana Acleris schalleriana Acompsia cinerella Acrobasis consociella Acrobasis repandana Agapeta hamana Agapeta zoegana Agonopterix liturosa Aleimma loeflingiana Anania hortulata Anania lancealis Ancylis achatana Anthophila fabriciana Aphomia sociella Archips craetagana Archips podana Archips xylosteana Argyresthia conjugella Argyresthia pruniella Batia lunaris Blastobasis lacticolella Blastodacna hellerella Bryotropha terrella Bryotropha terrella/desertella Caloptilia stigmatella Carcina quercana Carpatolechia fugitivella Cedestis gysseleniella Celypha lacunana Celypha striana Chrysoteuchia culmella Clepsis consimiliana Cnephasia sp Crambus lathoniellus Crambus perlella Crassa unitella Dioryctria abietella Ditula angustiorana Ectoedemia sp Elachista sp pos gangabella Elachista sp pos stabilella Emmetia marginea Endothenia nigricostana Endotricha flammealis Epagoge grotiana Ephestia sp Epiblema uddmanniana Epinotia abbreviana Epinotia signatana Epinotia sp Ethmia dodecea Ethmia quadrillella Eucosma cana Eucosma hohenwartiana Eudonia lacustrata Eudonia mercurella Eudonia pallida Euspilapteryx auroguttella Exoteleia dodecella Gelechia scotinella - pending Gelechia sororculella Grapholita funebrana Gypsonoma dealbana Gypsonoma sociana Hedya nubiferana Hedya ochroleucana Hedya salicella Hofmannophila pseudspretella Homoeosoma sinuella Hypsopygia glaucinalis Lathronympha strigana Mompha propinquella Notocelia trimaculana Pammene regiana Pandemis cerasana Pandemis heparana Parachronistis albiceps Paraswammerdamia albicapitella Phalonidia manniana Phycita roborella Prays fraxinella Pseudargyrotoza conwagana Pterophorus pentadactyla Rhopobota naevana Rhyacionia buoliana Scoparia ambigualis Scoparia basistrigalis Scythropia crataegella Strophedra nitidana Syncopacma sp Tinea semifulvella Tinea trinotella Tortrix viridana Udea olivalis Yponomeuta evonymella Ypsolopha parenthesella Zeiraphera isertana

Trip to Las Descargues 8th August - 18th August - Micro Moths Here is the second post containing all (or nearly all) of the Micro Moth species that I recorded on my 10 night stay to Las Descargues. The smaller moths were quite thin on the ground most nights and with lots of bigger bulkier moths crashing around in the traps it made it harder to actually pot them up and a few escaped at times! I still have a few for identification as always but so far the Micro Moth species list stands at 102 species. Species highlighted in red are completely new to me. All of the Macro and the Micro Moth species that I took photos of can now be viewed on my flickr page HERE Acleris variegana Acompsia cinerella Acompsia tripunctella Acrobasis advenella Acrobasis glaucella Acrobasis tumidana Adaina microdactyla Agapeta hamana Agapeta zoegana Agonopterix yeatiana Agriphila inquinatella Agriphila straminella Agriphila tristella Agrotera nemoralis Amblyptilia acanthdactyla Anania verbascalis Ancylolomia sp Antigastra catalaunalis Argyresthia bonnetella Argyresthia semitestacella Aroga velocalla Bactra lancealana Batia lambdella Batia lunaris Blastobasis glandulella Borkhausenia fuscescens Bryotropha basaltinella Bryotropha terrella Caloptilia alchimiella/robustella Caloptilia stigmatella Calybites phasianipennella Carcina quercana Carpatolechia decorella Catoptria falsella Catoptria pinella Celypha lacunana Celypha rivulana Celypha striana Chrysoteuchia culmella Clepsis rurinana Coleophora sp Coptotriche marginea Cosmiotes freyrella Crambus pascuella Cydalima perspectalis Cydia amplana Cynaeda dentalis Depressaria pulcherrimella Dialectica scalariella Dichomeris limosellus Dioryctria abietella Ectoedemia heringella Elachista canapennella Emmelina monodactyla Endothenia oblongana Endotricha flammealis Ephestia elutella Epinotia ramella Ethmia quadrillella Etiella zinckenella Eucosma conterminana Eudemis profundana Eudonia lacustrata Eudonia mercurella Euzophera pinguis Evergestis forficalis Homaloxestis briantiella Homoeosoma sinuella Khorassania compositella Lobesia botrana Metalampra italica Metendothenia atropunctana Monopis laevigella Monopis obviella Niphonympha dealbatella Nomophila noctuella Notocelia uddmanniana Oegoconia sp Oncocera semirubella Ostrinia nubilalis Oxyptilus ericetorum Palpita vitrealis Paraswammerdamia albicapitella Parornix sp Pediasia contaminella Phycitodes albatella Phycitodes binnaevella Phyllonorycter coryli Phyllonorycter harrisella Plutella xylostella Pyralis farinalis Pyrausta despicata Pyrausta purpuralis Pyroderces argyrogrammos Scrobipalpa acuminatella Scythropia crataegella Sitochroa palealis Stomopteryx detersella Synaphe punctalis Syncopacma ochrofasciella Syncopacma sangiella Udea ferrugalis

Summary[
edit] Description: A pleasing variety Back to trapping, and with a slightly cooler and less favourable night ahead compared to the two weekend nights, I wasn't expecting much. Luckily the cloud stuck around, and so did the moths and again not a huge amount, but a nice array of new species for the year making it another 10 to add to the year list. The majority of the catch was made up of Mottled Rustic (15) and Heart & Dart (34). A nice splash of colour with Barred Yellow and Small Emerald featuring for the first time this year. Privet Hawk-moth made up the size of the catch quite literally! Field Trip - Roughdown Common - 13/06/17 I had an eventful trip to Roughdown Common whereby we planned to run as many traps as possible, conditions were absolutely perfect, warm and humid with some cloud cover. We started the evening setting the first trap up in the field where there were three Cattle, Belted Galloways to be precise. They greeted us and then seemed to leave us alone for a bit after cleaning the cars with their tongues and having a good old itch on Steve's rear bumper. We left the field to set up a few more traps and then returned back to the car for more equipment, to our agony the trap had been thoroughly inspected by the cattle and there was slobber all over the trap and they did a mighty fine job of smashing the bulb but it could have been A LOT worse as the fragile plastic collar (the second most important part of the trap after the bulb) was still intact! How on earth it escaped being trodden on I do not know. Luckily Ian said he would nip back home and grab his spare bulb and we moved the trap through the gate and shut the gate....but they had done their 'investigating' and moved off for the rest of the night down the bottom of the field. After setting all the traps were set up, the battery operated one was low on juice..another minor set-back as we would only get possibly 2 hours life out of the tracer lithium ion battery. Things come in three's and of course nothing could be worse than a generator stopping, yep that's what happened...trying to get it started again flooded the spark plug and luckily I could use the spare that I had brought with me. Onto the moths and boy were we in for a night! The species just kept coming and coming and at one stage I couldn't keep typing the list. There are a few to check but best species so far were singles of Obscure Wainscot, Anania perlucidalis, Anarsia innoxiella and two good plume species (one to be checked) Merrifieldia leucodactyla/baliodactylus and Gillmeria pallidactyla. Thanks to Roger, Steve and Ian for helping out until the small hours, another successful trip with at least 160 species seen!
