Herpetogramma fluctuosalis (Lederer, 1863), to MV light, Kissimmee, Florida, 3/4 May 2015

On screen. 2nd observation from Texas on bugguide, both in July this year. Other from Liberty County, also SE Texas. Not on MPG data map. Almost identical to H. bipunctalis; difference is H. fluctuosalis lacks the 2 dark brown spots on the second sternite of the abdomen. My garden includes ornamental Ipomoea batatas. Interesting behavior - slowly twirling antennae, each going in opposite direction. Mate attracting?

At porchlight. Very similar to H. perspectalis, but note the namesake two black dots on either side of the base of the abdomen. These can sometimes be hidden under the HW. Here's the MPG page for the species.

This is apparently the first of the Fall of this regular species (Oct-Nov) at my porchlight. This one was perched high on the eve, thus the odd angle of the photo. [Some numerologist might want to look into this: This was image 7252 on my camera and the Hodges number for this species is 5272. What are the odds?]

"Had a group of 10 girl scouts earning their ""bug badge"" at the park this evening, so I put up the moth light! After the girls left, I was able to take a few shots of some night bugs. I'll spend some time working on these ID's later on with the discover life moth guide: http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20q?guide=Moth&cl=US/TX&flags=HAS:"
