Summary[edit] Description: Stenotus acaulis. Family: Asteraceae (commonly known as the aster, daisy, composite, or sunflower family). Occurs on sparsely vegetated, often shallow soil of grasslands, sagebrush steppe, coniferous woodlands, rock outcrops, and more commonly found on calcareous soil. Summary[edit] Description: stemless goldenheads, Stenotus acaulis, Nevada, White Mountains, Sugarloaf, Pinchot Creek - Columbus Salt Marsh drainage, elevation 2665 m (8745 ft). This species is widespread across the interior western United States from the northern and central Rock Mountains southwestward across the Columbia Plateau and Great Basin to the Sierra Nevada and northern Mojave Desert, in dry open habitats on various substrates from the higher valleys up to over 3600 meters (12,000 feet) elevation in the mountains.
