Biggest moth I ever saw. The Northlanders I was with were nonplussed - fairly common apparently up there. Ruralish property with Manuka/Kanuka, wilding pines and (I think) Acacia longofolia scrub surrounding, with some pig-fern undergrowth; there was the odd stand of macrocarpa and some mature eucalypts in the area. One pic is of the undersides taken through a window.

A dead moth found lying in the leaves under some eucalypts at Brooklands. Found by my Nana and passed to me.

Gum trees around the area, same area as last year found. A neat cocoon, work of art.

Hello! Found a moth on my way home. She wasn't in a good condition so took her home. After few days she died and left 2 eggs. Would like to know what to do with them! She 'glued' the eggs on the piece of driftwood she was on. Thank you

Caterpillar of Opodiphthera eucalypti
-
Shown shortly after emerging as a moth, having been brought inside when the branch its cocoon was on blew down about a month previously. The chrysalis was removed from the cocoon at that time, but unfortunately, I now realise that struggling to escape its cocoon is a necessary element in wing development, so when it came out, it never managed to unfurl them.
