Hard spherical fruit body about 1.5 cm diameter, bright red with pale speckles, found in Baton Rouge under mainly oak and sweetgum trees. Several of these appear to fall from some unidentified tree in the area.

Mature stem gall on a Shumard's Oak (Q. shumardii). Bumpy, not dimpled, with emergence hole visible. I did not open it to see the fibers inside. Reviewed http://bygl.osu.edu/content/oak-apple-wasp-galls-0 for ID confirmation.
