Mortensen (1951: p. 263) treated Pseudabatus as subgenus of Abatus because he felt that "the main character on which Koehler based his genus Pseudabatus, the larger distance from the apical system at which the marsupia begin, is scarcely sufficient for a generic distinction". There is some uncertainty regarding the true status of that genus, as it may differ by other, additional autapomorphies (compare A. Smith, "The Echinoid Directory"), yet a formalized revision of Antarctic palaeopneustids (Abatus, Amphipneustes, Pseudabatus) has yet to be published.
