A single female Red Crossbill was a surprising find in the Van Horn Cemetery on this late afternoon. I tried my best to get pics of the bird with my point-and-shoot camera which would normally be impossible (e.g., two out of three of these pics). If you stare hard enough, you can make out the strongly down-curved upper mandible in the two images of the bird on tree tops. I was startled when the bird raced towards me while I was playing some White-crowned Sparrow calls on my iPhone. It landed on a headstone not 5 feet from me. I tried to carefully redirect the camera and click off one shot but the bird bolted just as I hit the shutter. Nonetheless, I captured the bright yellow-green rump and forked tail of the crossbill!
