I'm pretty sure these are Cackling Geese based on the short neck and smaller stature compared to the Canada Geese I observed. Opinions welcomed.

Cackling Goose (species fairly recently split from Canada) -- thanks to all those Jersey Birders who posted. Not only got the bird in the short time I had to try for it in the late afternoon, but (unexpectedly) the storm clouds cleared in the west just as we got there, so I was able to get some shots. Can anyone comment on this bird? Bill is very petite, but head shape is quite rounded. although forehead is certainly higher than the Canadas'. Is this just within normal variation for Richardson's (B. h. hutchinsii)? And have there actually been three Cackling Geese present at this site? More here:www.flickr.com/photos/anitagould/3060534006/in/photostream/.

Pretty fantastic to see a field of these birds. @dpom told me her husband Doug worked on monitoring these years back. Rare to the Bay Area...

mostly little Cacklers, but also a few larger and longer-necked Canadas on the pond

The Cackling Goose is the bird in the rear in the second photo. I am not sure about the bird in the front of this photo. It was a small bird compared to the Canada Geese nearby

This group of 11 hung around for about two weeks before taking off.
