This is confirmed by most observers in the field. Short-ridge noticed it at Hanover in northern Cape Colony and Clarkestates that he actually found a female F. collaris breedingwith a male F. suhcoronatus at Bloemfontein in October. In the British Museum there are many intermediate formsbetween F. collaris, F. humeralis and F. suhcoronatus, chieflyfrom the Orange Free State and the Transvaal. From Bloemfontein there is a female with a fairly well-marked eyebrow, some white on the rump, hardly any on thesecondaries and grey freckled under-parts, on the wholereferable to F. suhcoronatus, but with traces of F, collaris. This example was collected by Clarke, August 17, 1901. A third, also a female from Bloemfontein, datedJune 15, 1903, obtained by Messrs. Woosnam and Dent, isindistinguishable from the typical F. collaris of Cape Town.A female from Vredefort Koad Station (Barrett Hamilton) isan undoubted F. Jiumercdis, while two males from Kroonstadhave traces of the white eyebrow. To sum up, the Coroneted Fiscal Shrike has its centre ofdistribution in German South-West Africa. Where its rangemeets that of F. collaris and F. humeralis it interbreeds, andintermediate forms are as prevalent as those apparently trueto type. The British Museum contains typical examples of thisspecies from Koys Fountain in Great Namaqualand and fromOtjimbinque and Swakop Eiver in Damaraland (Andersson),from the Hart Eiver in Bechuanaland (Jameson) and fromKuruman (Woosnam); examples ofNote About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.
