During some winters the Texas Panhandle is swarming with Longspurs. On my three previous days in this region, however, I had not seen a single longspur until I found this single bird perched on a fence line. The bird allowed me to get a number of images and I'm pretty sure it is a winter plumaged female Chestnut-collared, but @gcwarbler let me know if I have blown the ID.

Heard unfamiliar calls, and spotted a flock of nine small birds high overhead, with a very bouncy flight. Am not immediately familiar with each longspur species' calls, so could not ID to species, but very similar to past experiences with longspurs. Am very familiar with local sparrows and pipits, and the calls and flight behavior did not match any of those. Got these very distant photos of the birds flying away, which show lots of white on the tail, but are unfortunately not conclusively decisive. Almost all birds in the photos have their wings completely tucked in, suggestive of their very bouncy flight. Listening to recordings now, Chestnut-collared is the best match for what I remember. Mccown's and Lapland are too dry and staccato, I remember something more liquid and melodious. The birds landed in tall pasture grass, which is also suggestive of Chestnut-collared. So based on habitat and calls, I've settled on Chestnut-collared for the ID, which the photos don't contradict.
