This is usually all pasture but after all of the rain Christchurch has been having, it's now a shallow lake. Note the flock of pied stilts that has moved in. I counted 37 birds.

I am seeking confirmation that this is a juvenile Pied stilt that possibly has some Black Stilt hybrid genes. It weighs 105 gms and is 23cm from tip of beak to end of tail. I found it while bike riding. No stilt nests are known in the immediate vicinity though they are very occasionally seen in the area but more commonly in late spring early summer.

We stopped along Henderson Road to look at the wetland birds that have gathered in the fields flooded by the recent rain storm. I counted 71 pied stilts, two white faced herons, one spoonbill (see separate observation), plus the usual crowd of pukeko and a few ducks.
