Text on reverse: DE PRACHT DER ZOETWATERFLORA; 5) Victoria Regia; De lotusplant, de waterlelies en de Victoria behooren tot dezelfde familie, en de bloemen lijken inderdaad veel op elkaar. De Victoria werd in 't begin der vorige eeuw ontdekt op de Amazonenstroom. De stengel van de plant zit het slijk. Zoolang de bladeren ondergedoken zij, vertoonen ze zich als een stekelige bol, en ontvouwen zich, wanneer ze aan de oppervlakte komen. Volwassen bladeren hebben het uitzicht van reusachtige schotels, van wel twee meter diameter met een naar omhoog gebogen rand. De bladsteel is purperrood en draagt stekels evenals de nerven aan de onderzijde der bladeren. De bloem heeft een aangenamen geur, ze is rooskleurig en gemiddeld een vijf en twintigtal centimeter groot. De meeldraden zijn vuurrood en wanneer ze hun stuifmeel hebben vrijgelaten, sluit de bloem zich weer en duikt langzaam onder water om daar de vrucht tot rijpheid te brengen.
