This is an East African species in origin. In Israel it grows naturally in the hot deserts along the Rift Valley and especially laong the Dead Sea. Along the Rift Valley many African species migrated northwards and are considered very special and unique locally. The flowers of Abutilon fruticosum are openen only in the afternoon, when they shine like candles against the lower sunshine.

Italian Sainfoin (Hedtsarum coronarium) is a short leaved perennial common in Italy and S France. It is grown also for fodder. In Sicily we found out that this is more or less the commonest plant on the island.

These are male flowers of a caropb tree. Unlike most other tress in the Mediteranean region, this one blooms in autumn, hence its tropical origin.

Tribulus is a desert and tropical genus. This one is a desert species, occuring from the dead sea to the Gulf of Eilat. The flowers are almost inconspicuus, the fruits and winged, hairy and spiny.

Abutilon hirtum is an E African species penetrating northwards alogn the Rift Valley. In the Dead Sea area this is more or less the only flower blooming at the moment. It is found in prings, date groves and other irrigated places.

Paeonia mascula reaches its southern range in the Upper Galilee in northern Israel. Locally it is very rare, endangered and protected. At the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens we have a backup population for educational reasons and in case there are problems with the very few wild populations.
