via the key in tjm2, leaf and calyx should be densely hairy. Also, what separates L. nuttallii from pachyphyllus is tha the corolla tube for this taxon is equal to less than the calyx, as is shown. Do not confuse tube with the yellowish throat.

The plants at the garden bloom into December, much later than the bloom period given in other references.
