This is one of the largest and most impressive robber fly species in North America. Like its relative, Microstylum morosum, this species is conspicuously large and obvious as it moves from perch to perch. ericisley and I along with another friend spent nearly 45 minutes following this one robber fly around and getting images on various perches. It was only the 2nd time we had seen the species, so a lot of fun.

08-03-14_MG_0073 This one I watched take off after a grasshopper in flight and grab it and took off into a tree with it's prey. The grasshopper was larger then this over 2 inch long robber fly, This is the first time I seen this species actually capture prey.

one huge robber fly with his glowing emerald eyes it's so hard to get close to it without flying off, but today I finally got close enough to get a photo of it without flying off, it's so creepy looking and loud when they're buzzing by you
