The garden keeps on surprising me Last Friday I ran the trap again after doing very well on Wednesday night. The day had been warm and muggy and very little change as we continue to experience settled warm weather touching the low 30's. Well upon looking out of the window at 5am on Saturday morning, things looked rather promising indeed. There were moths absolutely everywhere! And I recorded the most moths that i've recorded so far this year with 91 species in total. Only my second garden record of Prays fraxinella (last seen in 2013!) despite a small Ash tree in the garden and some mature specimens in the surrounding area....mothing again never fails to surprise me. Red-necked Footman is now an annual moth for me which is pleasing. Marbled White Spot was a new moth for my garden, a relatively common moth in Hertfordshire but i've struggled to add it to the garden list taking 5 whole years! The 2nd new for the garden moth was a micro, Anania perlucidalis...a moth that I use to record regularly in damp habitats typically. A beautiful Pammene aurana was only my second garden record with my last one being in 2013. And finally a Leopard Moth returned again after a 4 year gap. Moths galore! Well things have all of a sudden picked up here in my garden with a huge selection of species and after a high of 27c the night was clear, but boy did it stay warm at a minimum of 15c even under clear skies, the moths were everywhere this morning and no doubt I missed a few. I don't normally run the trap at the weekend, but after going for a walk for more food for our caterpillars and seeing so much flying about, I am glad I did! Best Macro moths for me were garden first's of Red-necked Footman and Lobster Moth. Also both Toadflax and Foxglove Pug in one night was a surprise, another two new ones for the garden, all in all 24 were new for the garden and were 4 new for the year. 2 examples of the tiny little Ectoedemia decentella and a single Argyresthia retinella were both new moths for me, well chuffed! Interestingly the only species of Hawk-moth I have had in my garden since last August has been the Poplar Hawk-moth, where at my last house I recorded Lime, Eyed, Poplar, Privet, Elephant and Pine on an annual basis. 213 moths of 87 species total (51 Macro - 36 Micro) Catch Report - 06/07/13 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson trap Macro Moths 1x Red-necked Footman [NFG] 1x Lobster Moth [NFG] 1x Fan-foot [NFG] 1x Foxglove Pug [NFG] 1x Toadflax Pug [NFG] 1x Small Blood-vein [NFG] 1x Miller [NFG] 1x Buff Ermine [NFG] 1x Fern [NFG] 1x Buff Arches [NFG] 1x Maiden's Blush [NFY] 4x Treble Brown-spot 1x Grey Pug 4x Common Footman 5x Brimstone Moth 4x Willow Beauty 2x Maple Prominent 3x Flame Shoulder 2x Flame 4x Dot Moth 2x Green Silver-lines 3x Peppered Moth 3x Mottled Beauty 3x Treble Brown Spot 2x Pale Prominent 2x Common Marbled Carpet 25x Uncertain 3x Heart & Club 1x Light Emerald 3x Barred Yellow 3x Snout 1x Large Yellow Underwing 2x Marbled Minor 1x Ingrailed Clay 1x Brown Rustic 1x Pale Mottled Willow 21x Heart & Dart 1x Rustic Shoulder-knot 5x Mottled Rustic 3x Dark Arches 1x Garden Carpet 1x Freyer's Pug 1x Spectacle 7x Double Square-spot 1x Green Pug 1x Grey Dagger 1x Beautiful Golden-Y 3x Straw Dot 1x Angle Shades 2x Bright-line Brown-eye 1x Common Pug Micro Moths 2x Ectoedemia decentella [NEW!] 1x Epiblema uddmanniana [NFG] 1x Argyresthia retinella [NEW!] 1x Aphelia paleana [NFG] 1x Anthophila fabriciana [NFG] 1x Epiblema cirsiana (hindwing dark 'checked') [NFG] 2x Hedya nubiferana [NFG] 1x Ephestia parasitella [NFG] 1x Epiblema trimaculana [NFG] 1x Pammene aurana [NFG] 1x Archips podana [NFG] 1x Archips xylosteana [NFG] 1x Crambus pascuella [NFG] 1x Trachycera suavella [NFG] 1x Coleophora sp [NFY] 1x Tinea semifulvella [NFY] 1x Spilonota ocellana [NFY] 3x Udea olivalis 2x Celypha lacunana 3x Dipleurina lacustrata 1x Scoparia ambigualis 1x Amblyptilia acanthadactyla 2x Celypha striana 1x Emmelina monodactyla 6x Aleimma loeflingiana 8x Tortrix viridana 1x Aphomia sociella 1x Eurrhypara hortulata 1x Bryotropha terrella 6x Epiphyas postvittana 3x Chrysoteuchia culmella 1x Hedya pruniana 2x Argyresthia spinosella 3x Pandemis cerasana 2x Crambus lathoniellus 1x Caloptilia alchimiella
