Chiefly marine and brackish; sometimes entering fresh water. Distribution: west Africa, Indo-Pacific. Body deep and highly compressed. Pelvic fins usually reduced or vestigial. Dorsal fin with the base long and scaly. Spines in dorsal fin 5-8, short and graduated. Anal fin base long; spines 3. Scales cycloid or ctenoid. Often silvery. Valued as aquarium fishes.
