Sidalcea oregana ssp. valida—Kenwood Marsh checkerbloom. Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.1 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). It is also listed by the State of California and the Federal Government as Endangered . Only two occurences exist in Sonoma County, One at Kenwood Marsh and the other in Knight's Valley. Sidalcea setosa—Bristly checkerbloom. What is one to do when references disagree upon the existence of a taxon? Answer: go with the sign in the garden. The plant itself doesn't care if the label reads Sidalcea oregana ssp. spicata or plain Sidalcea spicata or Sidelcea setosa, the bloom will be as beautiful.
