08-03-14_MG_0073 This one I watched take off after a grasshopper in flight and grab it and took off into a tree with it's prey. The grasshopper was larger then this over 2 inch long robber fly, This is the first time I seen this species actually capture prey.

one huge robber fly with his glowing emerald eyes it's so hard to get close to it without flying off, but today I finally got close enough to get a photo of it without flying off, it's so creepy looking and loud when they're buzzing by you

This species is very common in this area this summer. ericisley and I saw perhaps 10 today in a short outing. Always a thrill to see even though common.

these huge robber fly freaks me out here in the park when they fly by you, this one was going after a grasshopper in the prairie area
