This guy I thought was a honey bee but as I looked more closely I noticed he did have what appeared to be similar markings. This was mimicry at it's best. Tried to device me this guy did. I think he was some sort of fly. He was only about an inch or so and looked like a honey bee but clearly had different shaped eyes, and different color patter that's different from regular bees. It is an warning that protects this fly from danger even though he is not dangerous at all. His winds resemble a fly's wings. This insect looks like a hodgepodge of fly and bee combine.

Observed alongside some great young naturalists (Logan, Brady, Aiden, Nate, and Erin -- and their parents) at the Harry S Moss bioblitz. Forgive me that these photos are poor and I didn't get multiple shots of the plants -- I usually won't use these, but it's good to get the species for the list today. It was too exciting and too much to see to spend lots of time on each thing! :)

Found on slender mountain mint in prairie restoration near Cedar Glen Nature Preserve.
