Lace monitor sighting

This was one of those times when you know just from the tone of your companion's voice that there is something totally awesome right where they're pointing, well before your brain really computes the meaning behind the words they've said. These are actually quite common in this area, but to a Californian, seeing any lizard longer than your leg is pretty exciting.

We saw this monitor on a termite mound from the road. We figured it was eating the termites since it seemed to have dug a little hole and there were termites in the soil it was excavating, but we later learned that monitors often lay their eggs in termite mounts, so maybe it was looking for a nest site.
