Distribution: Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Dorsal fins 2, spineless; anal fins lacking. Large spiracles; 5 gill openings. Mouth nearly terminal; eyes dorsal; nostrils terminal bearing barbels on anterior margin. Batoid-like shape. Maximum length up to 2 m. They feed on a variety of small bony fishes, crustaceans, cephalopods, gastropods and bivalves. They use their highly protrusible, traplike jaws to suddenly snap up prey at high speed.
