We were amazed by the number of these adorable little birds we saw on the track, especially around the Routeburn Falls hut.

On Banks Peninsula I'm used to seeing rifleman in large tracks of dense forest and kanuka. Around Glentanner, they're quite common in the matagouri and sweet briar scrub. This one was foraging through a matagouri out in the open on the edge of the carpark and public toilet.
