Summary[edit] Description: Heatwave continues More trapping again this week and I put the trap out again on the most favourable night that the forecasters had predicted. Thursday morning saw me going through the trap once again at 6am and jotting down the species present. I would love to trap every night, but couldn't justify the time making lists day after day, often repeating the same species. The trap wasn't brimming this morning but there was one surprise towards the bottom. The wetland Pyralid Donacaula forficella. A little tatty but a very welcome addition to the ever growing garden list. A nice collection of Micros were also new for the year. Weekly Round-up 04/07/17 to 11/07/17 It's been that good mothing this year that i'm really struggling to keep up and thus I have lumped my records together again as one big list of weekly moths (apologies to the innacurate data that I may provide at the end of the year). Juggling family life with moths and work is very difficult, particularly when you have less than an hour to go through 200+ moths of between 65 and 90 species every other morning, then photograph them after work and then process that and type up a list. On top of all that i'm struggling to get up with the dreaded man flu! So here is my weekly list of all the species and approximate numbers that i've recorded. Some real crackers all week and several species new for the garden! A second garden record of the ever-spreading Coronet was great to see as well as Anarsia innoxiella...will this recently seperated distinct species spread like Epiphyas postvittana and Tachystola acroxantha? The Miller and Barred Hook-tip were back after a 4 year absense and once again they are only my second garden records. Donacaula forficella was a welcome wetland wanderer which last appeared...guess when! in 2013 4 years ago again. Sitochroa verticalis and Elachista atricomella were new for the garden. Another blooming successful catch! August is upon us, and the mild weather looks set to continue, with a few outbreaks of rain here and there expected over the next week. Today was hot and humid and with a high of 34 degrees, it would have been rude not to set the trap up! Despite clear skies the temperature was still 19 degrees at 6am this morning. Moths were absolutely everywhere, in the trap, on the wall and within the long grass. It took just over an hour of sorting. Unfortunately quite a few had passed away, possibly to do with 4 dead wasps in the trap and a combination of high temperature and the sheer amount of Dot Moths and Dark Arches, the latter numbering close to 80 individuals. Best Macro moths were Barred Hook-tip, Campion, Slender Brindle and the long awaited Swallow Prominent (having had Lesser Swallow on numerous occasions) Best Micro moths were 3 Limnaecia phragmitella, Clavigesta purdeyi and the tiny Epinotia nanana. Adding 3 new Micros to my all time list was very pleasing indeed. I will be trapping again on Sunday night.
